Philip Johnson a world renowned architect born in Cleveland Ohio on July 8th 1908. He passed this year on January 5th 2005 leaving a lasting architectural legacy. He received numerous awards and honors like the first Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1979, he was awarded an American Institute of Architects Gold Medal in 1978, and he was also the first director of the architecture department at the Museum of Modern Art (New York) in 1946. Philip Johnson studied architecture at Harvard and contributed many buildings to cities throughout the world.
Philip Johnson’s mark on Atlanta is two recognizable buildings first is the One Atlantic Center or IBM tower built in 1987. It is 820 feet and has 50 floors. It was the tallest building in Atlanta until 1991.
The second was built 1990 and is the One Ninety One Peachtree Tower Building which is also 50 stories and provides 1.2 million square feet of office space. The building was designed with John Burgee and has a granite exterior. It looks to be two skyscrapers but is actually one. It received the 1991, 1998, 2003 BOMA - Building of the Year Award.
